Eighty years of Argentine speakers

LEEA was born in Buenos Aires in the 1940s and became one of the largest electroacoustics factories in South America. Today the brand carries on in woofers, drivers and spare parts for professional audio.

The name

Laboratorio de Specialties Electroacoustics

LEEA is the acronym the brand was known by across the country. An integrated factory: voice coils, cones, baskets and magnets were made under one roof.

Av. del Tejar 4335The historic plant, today Av. Ricardo Balbín: four floors, a basement, an acoustic chamber and a lab.

Thousands of speakers a monthBy the late 70s, production supplied equipment makers, cinemas, churches, schools and studios.

Immediate replacementThe recone kit as brand policy: the speaker gets repaired, not replaced.

  1. 1940sBuenos Aires

    Horns for the street

LEEA starts at Hipólito Yrigoyen 1874 making reentrant horns and drivers for street advertising. When the first cone speakers arrive, the factory calls them "direct radiators".

  2. 50 y 60Licenses

    Internationally licensed engineering

The factory works under licenses from US manufacturers and moves to the Av. del Tejar plant. Out come the coaxials, tweeters and transformers that collectors look for today.

  3. 70Golden age

    The standard of Argentine sound

12 and 15-inch woofers, high-compression drivers and piezo tweeters. LEEA builds 3-way systems that compete with imported brands and equips much of the country's professional audio.

  4. 80Technology

    Aluminum ribbon voice coils

With aluminum ribbon, Kapton and new adhesives, woofers and drivers gain power handling. By the end of the decade the brand adds amplifiers and mixers.

  5. 90Replacement

    Market opening and new suppliers

Opening up to imports changes the industry. Production adds components from Asia, and in 1998 the Av. del Tejar plant closes.

  6. 2012A new chapter

LEEA takes over the VMR factory

The brand takes over the VMR factory, heir to the local assembly of Electro-Voice since 1982, with its dies and machines for the PL and EVX series and the DH2 and DH3 drivers, and relaunches production under the LEEA name.
